The Level 1 class is a ten week course that includes all the basics necessary to satisfy the State requirements, and give you a solid foundation to build upon.Course Content ~ Level I Anatomy/Physiology and Structural Kinesiology - (50 hours)
Anatomy - the science of the structure of an organism or body.
Physiology - normal functions performed by various systems of the body.
Kinesiology - study of muscular activity and mechanics of body movement.


Massage Theory and Practice - (100 hours)
Courses of study in this class include: Theory of massage, during which you will learn:
- Specific swedish techniques - their application, when you would use them and their effects on tissues.
- Contraindications - when not to do massage, or when certain applications are limited.
- Draping - how to properly cover your client during a massage so that they feel secure and their privacy is honored.
- Assessment - how to read a clients intake form and postural assessment, what constitutes 'normal' and what muscles and soft tissues are involved when a person is not perfectly aligned and what kinds of symptoms might be present.
- Techniques for specific conditions - how techniques effect different tissues or systems and which ones to use for specific conditions.
- Record keeping - the importance of meticulous record keeping is discussed, with an introduction of different methods. Record keeping as it applies to 'insurance clients' is discussed.
- Hygiene - the importance of hygiene specific to massage is discussed, including the proper care of equipment, sheets, universal precautions, the room and of course personal hygiene.
Pathology - an introduction to different dysfunctions of the body, and how they relate to massage.
Professional Business Practice and Ethics - discussion topics range from establishing your own private business to the pros and cons to working for someone else (i.e. spa, Drs. Office etc.). We discuss professional
etiquette for greeting a client and ending a session. From attire to setting up a massage room. We discuss in depth topics regarding ethics - personal ethics, how we relate to our clients and other therapists, and
more wide ranging ethics of how we relate to our community, professional boundaries, rapport, the therapeutic relationship, transference of feelings between therapist and client.Supervised hands-on instruction - during this time you will learn a full body massage. It will incorporate the classic swedish techniques along with a few creative and advanced ones. It is intended to be a complete
and comprehensive massage by itself and also serve as a template for addition of advanced techniques as they are learned later on.
Tuition for level 1 is $1,500
